Our Proposal · Spring 2026

A Constitution
That Actually Works.

"Our platform is a document, not a slogan."

A complete rewrite of the Garfield ASB Constitution and Bylaws.

A government no one is watching.

While Garfield currently has a constitution, it is as well-known as it is followed. And before you ask, you're not the only person who's never heard of it. ASB meetings are private, and student government answers to no one.

This proposal is a new constitution built on three commitments: ASB will operate publicly, it will represent every student, and Garfield will have the tools to hold its student government accountable. It has been carefully drafted to comply with Seattle Public Schools legal requirements while reflecting the daily reality at Garfield.

In short, it's a constitution we believe in — and one we plan to follow.

What Actually Changes

1
Accountability

Public meetings, public comment.

Currently, ASB operates behind closed doors; our constitution opens them. Every meeting is public, and every meeting reserves time for student comment — with the right to pre-register, submit written testimony, or speak in person.

Bylaws · Article 1 · Article 2

2
Representation

The grades get the votes.

Today, anyone in the Leadership Class — elected or not — gets an equal vote on how Garfield's nearly $200,000 of ASB money is spent. Our structure replaces that with seven voting parties, each tied to an actual mandate from the people they represent.

3
Accountability

The right to recall.

Officers who fail to do their job can be removed. A petition from 25% of the student body triggers a recall vote of an ASB officer. A class officer needs only 33% of their class. For the first time, ASB is actually accountable to the students it serves.

Bylaws · Article 9

4
Accountability

A formal way to be heard.

Article VI gives every student the right to file a complaint when they're being mistreated by an SPS employee — with retaliation protections, confidentiality, and guaranteed response timelines. Every student deserves to be taken seriously. This guarantees it.

Constitution · Article VI

5
Representation

Amendment by petition.

Any student with 5% support can propose changes to the constitution. Substantive amendments must be ratified by the student body, not just by the Leadership Class. And it's not a rule that can be quietly undone next year — Article VIII protects itself, requiring even higher thresholds to change than the rest of the constitution.

Constitution · Article VIII

6
Representation

A seat at the table.

Article VII guarantees students full membership on the Building Leadership Team, hiring committees, and other building-level decision-making bodies. They serve as voting members, not observers or advisors, and are selected through a transparent process.

The Documents

You don't have to take our word for it. Here is the full proposal, the bylaws that operationalize it, and the standing rules that handle the day-to-day. Read every word.

Working Drafts

These documents are in active development through ratification. Some sections remain unfinished and will be refined with input from students, the current Executive Board, and school administration. We're sharing them now so the work is visible.

We are the only candidates running with a real plan, not a slogan.
